Reade Park, guitar Sonata para guitarra by Antonio José (1902-1936) 0:00 - I. Allegro Moderato 6:19 - III. Pavane Triste Prélude Op. 23, No. 5 by Sergueï Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), Arr. Antoine Fougeray* 10:26 --------------------------------------- About the Jose Sonata Sonata para Guitarra (1933) by Antonio José Antonio José (1902-1936) spent much of his 20s where he wrote many of the works that first gained him recognition. Offered a job back in his home town in 1929, he became director of the Burgos choir. When Nationalist forces overthrew the government in 1936, they began rounding up their enemies. José, who initially felt himself safe from persecution, was soon engulfed in the wave of politically motivated violence and was shot by a band of vigilantes. His 1933 Sonata para Guitarra, only partially premiered by Sainz de la Maza, is his only work for guitar. Its first complete performance had to wait until 1981, when Cuban-American guitarist Ricardo Iznaola played it for the Spanish radio broadcast Lunes Musicales de Radio Nacional. The Western Classical Music tradition has developed continuously beginning approximately in the year 1000 and continuing to the present day. The music style has constantly changed to reflect the changing experiences of people throughout that time period. Music is a nonverbal language that provides access to the feelings evoked by the social and cultural traditions of different times and places. Music allows us to transcend our own world and partake in completely different realities. Musical experience opens our minds as very few other things can. The history of this music is usually divided into six large historical periods. 1000-1400 Medieval 1400-1600 Renaissance 1600-1750 Baroque 1730-1820 Classical 1815-1910 Romantic 1900-present 20th and 21st Century Music Since the beginning of the 20th century the western Classical Music tradition has reflected the growing interconnectivity of the world as well as the more fluid social structures by opening to influences of various World music and Popular music traditions.
