Steynsrus was established in 1910 in the Free State province of South Africa. It was named in honour of Martinus Theunis Steyn, the final State President of the independent Boer Republic of the Orange Free State before the Second Boer War (1899–1902). The town’s name literally means “Steyn’s Rest” in Afrikaans, reflecting both its founder’s legacy and the idea of a resting place in the wide Free State plains. Historical Context Martinus Theunis Steyn (1857–1916) was a key figure in the Free State Republic, known for his leadership during a turbulent period that included the Anglo-Boer War. He advocated for the interests of the Boer republics and sought peace during the war, although conflict ultimately proceeded. After the war, the region and its people underwent significant social and political change as the Boer Republics were incorporated into the Union of South Africa (1910). Steynsrus grew as an agricultural service centre in the maize and mixed farming region between Kroonstad and Senekal. Its location was strategic in the early 20th century as a stop on horse and wagon routes across the Free State’s vast farmland. A sandstone Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1928, is one of the town’s most striking and enduring architectural landmarks, symbolising the role of faith and community in the early settlement. Today, Steynsrus remains a small farming community reflecting typical rural Free State life — wide open skies, agricultural landscapes and a close-knit community. #steynsrus #SouthAfricaDroneFootage #SouthAfricaAerialViews #SouthAfricaTravel #SouthAfricaTowns #HistoricChurchesSouthAfrica #SmallTownSouthAfrica #CinematicDroneFootage #LensOverSouthAfrica #SouthAfricaFromAbove #DroneViewsOfSouthAfrica
