In this episode, we explore the role of nursemaids and nannies in late 19th to mid-20th century Europe, focusing on England and France. We consider questions such as how these caretakers influenced a child’s inner life, personality, and identity, and what became of their relationships once the children grew up. The discussion also touches on how art and literature have portrayed these bonds, from visual art to children’s literature. About the Guest: Professor Katie Trumpener is the Emily Sanford Professor of Comparative Literature and Professor of English at Yale University. Her research spans from the late 18th century to the present, with a focus on British and European literature and culture. Her work includes studies in film history, visual culture, music, and children's literature, alongside broader themes such as nationalism, regionalism, and the cultural impacts of WWI, WWII, and the Cold War. She is currently researching the institutionalisation of Marxist aesthetics in postwar Central Europe. About the host: Daphne Adam is a recent graduate of the Master of Philosophy in English Studies at Queens' College, University of Cambridge.
