Sharing the book, "Goddess: 50 Goddesses, Spirits, Saints, and Other Female Figures Who Have Shaped Belief." It is written by Dr. Janina Ramirez and illustrated by Sarah Walsh. This video gets into Kali, Hindu Goddess of Time, Creation, and Destruction. Kali is also known as, "She Who Is Death," "Devourer of All Things," and "The Force of Time." Hindus believe we are living in the Age of Kali. Kali is time. I share Kali during Black History Month because it is said that Kali has skin so black, it's blue. (Right now I'm reading Imani Perry's book, "Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People," so the connection is not lost on me). Kali's black skin is said to be terrifying, like Kali herself. She is a fierce and powerfully strong warrior that is happiest on the battlefield. She beheads demons and defeats forces of chaos. Legend has it Kali burst out of the warrior goddess Durga's forehead. She helped defeat Raktabija with her red tongue. In this way, Kali is connected to death and destruction, but also life and love. She has an important relationship with the god Shiva. The book says the two cannot exist without the other. Together they show the important relationship between action and gentle thought needed to keep balance. She is wild and passionate, representing Shakti. Kali is shown with black or blue skin . She has 4 arms that hold weapons and the heads of those she has defeated. Kali wears a necklace made of skulls and a skirt made of human arms. She is the universe, representing the cycle between time, life, and death.
