What Is PMMA Made From? -- PMMA, or Polymethyl Methacrylate, is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer primarily made from the monomer methyl methacrylate (MMA). This clear, rigid plastic, widely known by trade names like Plexiglas or Lucite, is produced through a chemical process called polymerization. During polymerization, thousands of individual methyl methacrylate molecules chemically link together in long chains to form the much larger PMMA polymer. This reaction is typically initiated using a free-radical mechanism, where a small amount of an initiator substance creates highly reactive free radicals. These radicals then attack the double bond in the MMA monomer, causing it to open up and connect to other monomers, thereby forming the long polymer chains. The methyl methacrylate monomer itself is typically derived from petrochemical feedstocks, often via processes involving acetone and hydrogen cyanide, or more modern olefin-based routes. Essentially, PMMA is a polymer of methyl methacrylate. ⚠️ Disclaimer: Videos are created for educational purposes only and do not constitute professional, medical, financial, or legal advice.
