President Donald Trump discussed his Truth Social post that the United States will pause some tariffs for 90-days and raise tariffs on China to 125%. "I thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line, they were getting yippy, ya know, they were getting a little bit yippy, a little bit afraid," Trump said when asked about the pause. "No other president would have done what I did. No other president, I know the presidents they wouldn't have done it." The news sent stocks surging, with the Dow up 2,800 points. "We have a tremendous amount of spirit from other countries, including China," Trump said. "China wants to make a deal. They just don't know how quite to go about it. You know, it's one of those things they don't know quite -- they're proud people. And, President XI is a proud man." "I did a 90 day pause for the people that didn't retaliate because I told them, if you retaliate, we're going to double it," Trump added. "That's what I did with China, because they did retaliate." Trump made the remarks while hosting Team Penske and NASCAR Cup Series Champion Joey Logano at the White House. Read the president's full post below: "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately.
