The history behind Knowth and Newgrange is fascinating. We can't say that we had visited many prehistoric Neolithic passage tombs prior to this trip - or any pre-Neolithic places for that matter - but after visiting these ancient tombs, we went on to see other places throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland that were older than we could imagine. Knowth and Newgrange are located in the Brú na Bóinne area in County Meath and are older than the pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge in England. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. Every year at the start of the winter solstice, a handful of people who enter a free lottery are given the opportunity to witness a beam of light enter the tombs to mark the new year. Some say these burial mounds were places of religious significance as well. This video is the fifth of a daily video series of our travels to Ireland and Northern Ireland in June of 2018. From walking the lush greenery in the rugged hills and glens, hiking the breathtaking cliffs and coastal mountains, exploring caves and crags and remote off-shore islands, to the castles and ruins and hallmarks of pre-neolithic civilizations, we can honestly say it was one of the best times we have ever had. And do you know what was the most beautiful about the Emerald Isle? The people. In the cities or the countryside, to the north and the south, in pubs, tea rooms or during a walk. Some of the most warm, kind, affable (and usually very funny) people you will ever meet are in Ireland, and they'll be sure to fill you in on where all the good craic is.
