Soprano Roberta Alexander and pianist Tan Crone perform "Solitary Hotel", composed by by Samuel Barber. They called her an early champion of the songs of Samuel Barber, Charles Ives and Leonard Bernstein. Roberta Alexander has been introducing audiences to works by American composers since the early 1970s. In the early 70s she moved from the US to Holland and she is still going strong. Roberta Alexander was a phenomenon and sung on most opera stages, including the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden the Opera Houses of Berlin and in Amsterdam. But besides her love for opera she loves to sing songs. As you can hear in “Solitary Hotel”, the fourth song in Samuel Barber’s cycle Despite and Still, Op. 41. Barber is one of the finest of all songwriters of the 20th century. His studies as a singer profited him as a songwriter. More than many composers, he knew both how to get the most out of a singer as well as how to write considerately. “Solitary Hotel” is based on a passage from James Joyce’s Ulysses."
