At Crufts this year I was invited by the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) to give a live demonstration exploring an idea that sits at the heart of my training philosophy: Play is a superpower. Most people think of play as something we do with our dogs simply for fun. But play can be much more than that. When used thoughtfully, it becomes one of the most powerful ways to build: • self-control • focus around distractions • communication between dog and handler • and a deeper relationship with your dog. In this session I’m joined by my 9-year-old Border Collie, Toddy, as we demonstrate how play can help dogs learn to listen even when they’re excited - something that’s essential for real-world reliability. We look at: • using toys to teach impulse control • why dogs need to practise thinking while aroused • recall and listening when the dog isn’t looking at you • using retrieve games as training tools • how play reveals who your dog really is. This demonstration took place live at Crufts, the world’s largest dog show, and includes practical examples you can start exploring with your own dog. If you live with a dog who becomes too excited to think, play may be the missing piece in your training. About me I’m Gemma Fisher, a Border Collie training and behaviour specialist and founder of Collie Culture. I help owners build calmer, more connected relationships with their dogs through thoughtful training and play. Want more help with your dog?
