What did it mean to be "Arab" in early Islam? Was Arab identity a pre-Islamic concept, or did it emerge in response to new political and cultural forces? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Peter Webb, Lecturer in Arabic at Leiden University and author of Imagining the Arabs, to explore the formation of Arab identity in the early Islamic period. We discuss how Arabness was shaped through literature, historical narratives, and political transformations, questioning modern assumptions about ethnicity and identity in the medieval Islamic world. Dr. Webb brings his expertise on Arabic literature, pre-Islamic Arabia, and the evolution of Arab identity to this thought-provoking discussion, shedding light on how the early Muslims defined themselves in relation to their past and the wider world.
