Magnetism is one of the fundamental forces of nature that plays a crucial role in various physical phenomena. From the simple attraction between a magnet and iron to the complex working of Earth's magnetic field, magnetism influences our everyday life. In this session, we will explore Magnetism and Matter, a key topic in NEET 2025 Physics that carries significant weight in competitive exams. This comprehensive guide will cover everything you need to master this chapter and score well in your NEET exam. What is Magnetism? Magnetism is the force exerted by magnets when they attract or repel each other. It arises due to the motion of charged particles. The two essential characteristics of magnetism include: Attraction and Repulsion: Like poles repel each other, whereas unlike poles attract. Field Effect: A magnet creates a magnetic field around it, which influences other materials within its range. Types of Magnetic Materials Magnetic materials are classified into three categories based on their interaction with an external magnetic field: 1. Ferromagnetic Materials Strongly attracted by a magnet. High permeability. Retain magnetism even after removing the external field (used in permanent magnets). Example: Iron, Nickel, Cobalt. 2. Paramagnetic Materials Weakly attracted to a magnet. Have unpaired electrons that align with the magnetic field. Magnetism disappears once the external field is removed. Example: Aluminum, Platinum, Oxygen. 3. Diamagnetic Materials Weakly repelled by a magnetic field. Do not have unpaired electrons. Example: Copper, Gold, Bismuth. Earth's Magnetism The Earth behaves like a gigantic magnet with a magnetic field extending into space. The important aspects of Earth's magnetism include: Magnetic Axis and Geographic Axis: The Earth's magnetic field is tilted at an angle of approximately 11.3° from its geographic axis. Magnetic Poles: The Earth's magnetic poles are different from the geographic poles. Elements of Earth's Magnetism: Magnetic Declination (θ): The angle between the geographic and magnetic meridians. Magnetic Inclination (Dip) (α): The angle made by Earth's magnetic field with the horizontal. Horizontal Component of Earth's Magnetic Field (BH): The component of the total magnetic field along the horizontal direction. Conclusion and Tips for NEET 2025 Understand Concepts Clearly: Focus on the basics of magnetism and practice numerical problems. Memorize Key Formulas: Be thorough with dipole moment, torque, and field strength formulas. Practice Previous Year Papers: Solve NEET-level MCQs for better understanding. Revise Earth's Magnetism and Hysteresis: These topics are frequently asked in NEET. Time Management: Allocate proper time to solve numericals during the exam. With Mission 100, DNA Learning is here to guide you in your NEET 2025 journey. Stay consistent, practice regularly, and keep your motivation high.
