The rebels had pledged to pull out of Monrovia at noon local time on Thursday, as soon as their demands that warlord president Charles Taylor leave Liberia and that West African peacekeepers deploy had been met. US President George W. Bush - authorising the first US peace mission to Africa since fighting in Somalia killed 18 US troops in 1993 - likewise had ruled out deploying any significant American force until Taylor departed.
