The inspiration for this book came from a challenge from NIk the Booksmith called the Desert Island Challenge. The back story is what if someone were on a ship that wrecked and then became deserted on an island. They would have minimal items you could use to make a book. For this book challenge we were able to select 4 items that we could use in addition to the 5 given basic items we were allowed, like paper, scissors, glue, and thread to bind the book. The person I envisioned this book belonging to was a woman from the late 1800s to early 1900's. I thought a monochromatic book would best tell her story. Within the book I wanted to display the pull between two opposites, an elegant world from before verses a tattered living after. I also wanted the book to show a coming together of these two world, creating a tattered elegance. I envisioned the woman behind the book exhibited a strength to rise up, have hope and create an elegance and wholeness within her new life.
