Thanks to a sale of rooms on the Caledonian Sleeper during November, I booked myself a cheap return trip from London Euston to Fort William, travelling up on a Monday night and returning the next night, in a Club En-suite cabin both ways. Yes, it was just for the day but I only wanted to experience the sleeper train, not having done so since 2006. Fort William is a wonderful place to visit, anyway, despite the weather being typical for November but at least it stayed dry for much of the day. The sleeper accommodation was very good but would be a bit cramped for two people and having the en-suite toilet and shower was also handy. However, the water in the shower and wash basin was cold both nights (not nice on cold November mornings) for which I did complain and received an apology and a refund so thank you Caledonian Sleeper. Compared to the normal price of these Club En-suite cabins (£350 one way, albeit that is for one or two people) I paid just £260 return, thanks to the offer and the use of my Senior Railcard - a bargain! I also dined in the Club Car on the train both journeys and the first night was excellent, however, the return trip was not so good with staff who spent most of the time chatting amongst themselves. The other issue was that, due to engineering works on the line between Glasgow and Fort William, I had to alight at Kingussie and travel on a replacement bus service, which was actually, very comfortable, so no complaints really. Of course it would have been nice to travel over Rannoch Moor but it would have been too dark to see anything anyway.
