This video provides an introduction to the vital functions within or near the prostate that might be affected by radiation. It presents the successful preservation of erectile function by defining and avoiding erectile tissues near the prostate. This research was completed at the University of Michigan and St. John Providence Hospital. This preservation was achieved even with the most aggressive combination therapies (seeds plus beam) which are typically associated with greater erectile dysfunction. The functional anatomy approach can also minimize bladder and rectal effects. Future studies will limit dose to structures immediately adjacent to the prostate as discussed in the Lancet review from May 2016.
