The pastoral Maasai are fully nomadic, wandering in bands throughout the year and subsisting almost entirely on the meat, blood, and milk of their herds. Their kraal, consisting of a large circular thornbush fence around a ring of mud-dung houses, holds four to eight families and their herds The clans themselves are patrilineal, and are sub-divided into sub-clans or sections distinguished by their cattle brands. The five original clans are the il-makesen, il-aiser, il-molelian, il-taarrosero, and il-ikumai. The Maasai practice polygamy, meaning one man can marry many wives, as long as he pays the bride price. Often, the weddings are arranged when girls are quite young. Maasai also practice polyandry, meaning that a woman marries both her husband and his circumcision group.
