First Trip Back to the Florida Keys… and a Barracuda Nearly Spools Me

Two days. Crystal clear water. Giant barracuda. This was our first kayak fishing trip back to the Florida Keys together in over 5 years — and Kristen’s first year fishing and first time kayak fishing the ocean. We based out of Cudjoe Key and explored the backcountry flats, mangroves, and hidden channels behind the island. Day one was a shakedown close to the house. Day two delivered some of the calmest conditions I’ve ever seen in the Keys — water so clear it felt like fishing an aquarium. The trip started with a barracuda ripping drag and never really slowed down. We ran into: Big, aggressive barracuda Lane snapper & mangrove snapper Jacks, pufferfish, turtles, and nonstop bait activity Endless flats, drop-offs, and mangrove-lined channels boats can’t reach This was also my first time ever running the Old Town Sportsman 106 MK on the ocean. Being able to reach backcountry water that would be impossible to pedal — especially fighting tide and current — completely changed how we explored and fished this area. Kristen got her first taste of snapper fishing, learned quickly what barracuda love to do to your bait, and soaked in what makes the Florida Keys such a special place.
