The Liberation War of Bangladesh is often considered to have begun when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman held his famous speech on 7 March at the Ramna Race Course in Dhaka. In his address to a gathering of around a million people, Mujib proclaimed: “This time the struggle is for our freedom. This time the struggle is for our independence.” Who could have predicted the sequence of events, the catastrophic consequences and the humanitarian crisis that famous speech was followed by?
