Baganda are known to be very spiritual people and their ancient spirituality is still practiced today. They divided the spiritual realm into four main Levels which included; Level one: “Gulu”, meaning heaven/ “Katonda” meaning the creators. He is God to them but was believed not to directly engage in human affairs, that’s why they prayed through mediators like “Lubaale” to take their plight to God (Katonda/Gulu) Level Two: “Lubaale”, these were human beings like us who passed on but showed great prowess while still alive and prayer petitions were and are still made through them depending on what they were good at while still alive. Level Three: “Mizimu” meaning spirits like you hear someone dies and their spirit lives their body. They are believed to speak when summoned for inquiry or answers to certain questions. Level Four: “Misambwa”, these are benevolent but extremely vicious spirits if not appeased like “walumbe” the father of Death.
