#martyrepriests A procession by Catholics in the French capital paying tribute to the priests and archbishop who were martyred during the infamous Paris Commune uprising of 1871 was attacked by members of the antifa on Saturday, May 29. As many as 300 Catholics were going in procession from la Roquette square, the place of execution of Archbishop Georges Darboy, to the church of Notre Dame des Otages when they were attacked by a hooded gang carrying red flags and shouting threatening slogans. They attacked the peaceful parishioners, tore their banners and knocked down the flag of the French remembrance. Members of the antifa also hurled bottles and trash cans at believers. One of them was seriously injured and had to be hospitalised. Several Catholic priests were martyred for the faith during the uprising influenced by Communist ideals. Two Congressmen oppose recommendation allowing research on human embryos more than 14 days old Two Congressmen in the US have voiced their opposition against the new recommendation by a scientific organization that removes curbs on the research of human embryos more than 14 days old. Senators Chris Smith and Mike Braun have expressed dismay over the new guidance issued by the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) urging discussions among leading scientists, donors and public officials regarding the possibility of conducting research on human embryos that are more than two weeks old. Currently, the standard policy is to destroy embryos used in research before they reach 14 days when the nervous system begins to develop. The Senators said that the ISSCR has shown utter disregard for the value and dignity of human life. USA’s first cathedral begins bicentennial celebrations with Perpetual Adoration The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Baltimore, which is the first Catholic cathedral to be built in the US, is celebrating its bicentenary with a host of events. Celebrations took off with the beginning of perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, May 31. Marking the consecration of the cathedral on May 31, 1821, a bicentennial Holy Mass was offered by Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore with a limited number of faithful at 2 pm local time on Monday. After the Mass, the prelate blessed the chapel of Perpetual Adoration in the basilica. The basilica’s patronal feast day of the Assumption will be celebrated during the bicentennial year. During the Mass celebrated by Archbishop Lori on August 15, Bishop Robert Barron, auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles, will preach the homily. Thousands march in Zagreb protesting against abortion The streets of Zagreb in Croatia witnessed thousands of pro-life supporters marching against abortion on Saturday, May 29. Waving Croatian flags and singing patriotic songs, protesters marched with banners that read “Unborn Lives Matter too” similar to the slogan “Black Lives Matter”. While the pro-life supporters marched on, those advocating abortion stood on the sidewalks dressed in blood-stained aprons carrying hooks, alluding to illicit terminations of pregnancy. One of the organizers of the march Luka Hudincec said it is the duty of all people to protect human life, including unborn babies. The sixth edition of the pro-life march was hosted on the eve of the local elections in the Croatian capital where a Left-supported candidate was favoured more than another conservative.
