I am so happy to welcome everybody here, the huge press corps, to welcome you here for the Christmas season of 2006. You can see from the tablecloths in here and the decorations on the tree that we took our cue this year from the Red Room. This is such a beautiful old house and it is such a perfect house to decorate for the holidays because of the predominant use of red always in the decoration of the White House and it worked so perfectly for the holiday season." 12. Pan view of decorated trees STORYLINE Kicking off the holiday season even before the start of December, America's First Lady, Laura Bush, unveiled holiday decorations and Christmas trees at The White House on Thursday. Announcing the 2006 holiday theme as "Deck the Halls and Welcome All", Mrs Bush showed off a White House covered in reds - scarlet, crimson and fuchsia - to accent the traditional touches of the holiday decorations. "This is such a beautiful old house and it is such a perfect house to decorate for the holidays because of the predominant use of red always in the decoration of the White House and it worked so perfectly for the holiday season," she said. The official White House Christmas tree occupies most of the Blue Room. The Douglas fir, grown in Pennsylvania, twinkles with crystals and ornaments of iridescent glass. In all there are 17 decorated trees in the White House, more than 45-hundred red ornament balls and nearly 270 wreaths in the holiday display. The Gingerbread White House alone has about 3-pounds pounds of gingerbread and dark chocolate and is covered with more than 8-hundred hand-piped icing snowflakes. The White House expects more than 45-thousand visitors throughout the holiday season.
