If you are reading a paragraph about ‘SUGAR,’ this is a very broad or general topic. You may ask, why? This topic is very general or very broad as there is a great deal of information available on this topic. General topics are usually one -word topics. When you are asked to identify the topic of a reading, never write a one-word topic as the topic would not be captured precisely in just one word. Specific Topics Specific topics, on the other hand, are examples of the general topic. Specific topics are narrower topics, but they may not capture the essence of the paragraph. Precise Topics Topics can be more focused and more precise. When you identify a precise topic of a reading, try to use a short phrase. Your phrase should be two to four words used to identify and limit a precise topic.
