Riot policeman running back to rejoin group STORYLINE Stone-throwing students clashed with Kenyan riot police and paramilitary officers in the capital Nairobi on Tuesday during a protest demanding the resignation of the police commissioner over the killings of a fellow student and two activists who were researching extrajudicial killings when they were shot last week. Over one-thousand students peacefully marched through the city centre but the demonstration degenerated into violence after some youths began throwing stones and looting shops. Taxi drivers began throwing stones back, sparking a stampede among pedestrians. Around a hundred students eventually moved onto the main campus at the University of Nairobi and showered the police and passing traffic with stones. Police responded with tear gas and baton charges. The protesters carried banners and chanted slogans demanding the resignation of Police Commissioner Mohammed Hussein Ali. The student was killed by police during a protest on Thursday against the killing of the activists, which was taking place outside one of the residence halls at the University of Nairobi. Three policemen were arrested over the student's death. The police commissioner has said that authorities were investigating all possibilities regarding the killings last week of the two activists, whose deaths came a week after a United Nations expert accused Kenya's police of running death squads during a crackdown on the notorious Mungiki gang and hours after their denunciation by a government spokesman. The police commissioner has repeatedly dismissed charges of police links to hit squads. Many of the students taking part in Tuesday's protest also wore black T-shirts with political slogans demanding legislators pay taxes on their fat salaries or the resignation of parliament - a sign that grievances from different groups might be converging. The government has only been in power for a year but it is already embroiled in a series of financial scandals at a time when the price of staple foods is rocketing and (m) millions of Kenyans are at risk of hunger. Cabinet ministers are trading blame over the scandals and already jockeying for position for the next elections in 2012.
