Pattani is a very small province (1,940 sq km/750 sq mi) that lies in the Deep South of Thailand and is little visited by Western tourists - in fact, it's the least visited province in the country according to data from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports in 2018 with the number of tourists only coming in at 20,000–30,000, mostly Thai. It was originally a Malay Sultanate before being governed by Siam since its conquest in 1785.
