Kalapana at the Cotton Club, Tokyo (8/30/25) Last night at the Cotton Club in Tokyo, we experienced something unforgettable. It was the second Saturday show, starting at 7:30 PM. We arrived a little early, around 6:45, and were escorted to perfect seats—center of the audience, right where the sound was best. On either side of us were two longtime fans, lovely Japanese ladies who proudly shared that they had been following Kalapana for decades. They even had pictures with autographs from the original members from years ago. Their devotion set the tone: this wasn’t just another concert—it was a gathering of people here in Tokyo who carried Kalapana deep in their hearts. When the lights dimmed, the stage filled with both familiar and new faces. Of the original Kalapana members, only Gaylord Holomalia on keys, Kenji Sano on bass and Todd Yukumoto on Sax were present. Alongside them were talented musicians who have carried Kalapana’s spirit forward: Zanuck Lindsey channeling Mackey Feary’s role, Alden Levi stepping into Malani’s slippahs, Ben Tacca on guitar and vocals adding richness to the Kalapana harmonies and Konrad Kendrick nailing every beat with the precision and power you’d expect from the original Kalapana records. Before the concert, during lunch Gaylord had told me about something special he was preparing: video tributes of the late Mackey Feary, Malani Bilyeu, and DJ Pratt. I’ll admit—I was worried. These were my friends. I didn’t want to see their legacy handled in any way that felt less than respectful. But when the show began, all my doubts vanished. Projected above the stage were crystal-clear videos of the original members, singing and playing as they had on the hit recordings everyone knew by heart. On stage, the current band didn’t just play along—they wove in rich, live harmonies that gave the music depth and life. It was as if the past and present fused into one living Kalapana. The effect was powerful. At moments, I felt tears well up as I watched my departed friends—Mackey, Malani, DJ—brought back to us in a way that was beautiful, dignified, and alive. It wasn’t a gimmick; it was a heartfelt tribute. The Cotton Club audience could feel it too. For a moment, it was almost like the original Kalapana stood before us again. After the show, we gathered backstage. The room was buzzing—conversations overlapped, laughter spilled out, and Kenji moved through the crowd pouring champagne into glasses, fueling the joy and keeping every conversation flowing. I told Zanuck and Alden how impressed I was with how faithfully they carried their parts, especially praising Zanuck for his meticulous work in covering the guitar lines crafted by DJ Pratt. I turned to Todd and complimented him on his masterful saxophone playing—his soaring lines lifted the music to another level. Konrad’s drumming was equally brilliant, steady yet alive. I was relaying that we all appreciated the sheer craft that all the members delivered that night. Then Gaylord, with a sincerity only he can bring, leaned in and asked me, “Kong, what did you think? I really want to know, because you’ve been with us since the beginning.” I told him the truth: I was deeply impressed, both musically and emotionally. What they achieved wasn’t just a concert. It was a reunion with friends who are no longer here, a way of keeping Kalapana alive for new generations while honoring the originals with absolute respect. So, from someone who’s known Kalapana since their earliest days, here’s my recommendation: if you want to feel the true Kalapana experience, go see this show, especially the 50th Anniversary show in Hawaii at the Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell on Saturday night, October 4th, under the stars! You’ll come away amazed—and touched. I’ll see you there! Tickets: https://www.waikikiamp.com/.../kalapa... • Kalapana- Moon & Stars (Live At The Waikik... • Kalapana feat.
