For nearly 30 years Michel Schwalbé had been the first violinist and concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra recognized as one of the best in the World. It had been Herbert von Karajan's (legendary conductor and director of The Berlin Philharmony) special request to hire Schwalbé. His performances of many pieces have set the standards for classical music. The best example is „A Hero's Life” by Richard Strasuss – Schwalbé's violin solo part is a masterpiece. Schwalbé was born in the City of Radom in 1919. His Jewish family was assimilated with the Polish society. Almost all of his family members, including his parents and sister, were murdered in gas chambers of the German Nazi extermination camp in Treblinka. That is one of the reasons for Schwalbé had been forgotten in Radom. He considered himslef as Polish, despite the fact that during his music studies in Paris he changed his name from Mieczysław Szwalbe to Michel Schwalbé. To underline his sentiment for Poland, colleagues from the Berlin Philharmony had called him Schwalbowski. He was also using beautiful Polish language. History of Radom is full of outstanding culture and arts characters. Such names as Andrzej Wajda, Jacek Malczewski or Józef Brandt are recognized in Radom and Poland. Will the memory of the violin virtuoso Mieczysław Szwalbe (Michel Schwalbe) become more popular in Radom? „Resursa Obywatelska” Culture and Arts Center with the help of Radom-born violinist – Mateusz Strzelecki, had already brought the memory of Schwalbé back to life during the events connected with his 100th birth anniversary in 2019. Jakub Mitek and Piotr Buczak from „Resursa” created a documentary movie as a part of a larger cultural and commemoration project. Today we share the English language version of the documetary „Michel Schwalbé – concertmaster from Radom”.
