Structural isomerism in Coordination Compounds means compounds having same molecular formula but different bonding arrangement between ligands, metal, and counter ions. Types of Structural Isomerism 1️⃣ Ionisation Isomerism Occurs when ligand inside coordination sphere exchanges with counter ion outside. On dissolving in water they produce different ions. Example: [Co(NH₃)₅Br]SO₄ and [Co(NH₃)₅SO₄]Br First gives SO₄²⁻ ion in solution Second gives Br⁻ ion 2️⃣ Hydrate (Solvate) Isomerism Occurs when water molecules are inside coordination sphere in one compound and outside in another. Example: [Cr(H₂O)₆]Cl₃ [Cr(H₂O)₅Cl]Cl₂·H₂O [Cr(H₂O)₄Cl₂]Cl·2H₂O All have same formula: CrCl₃·6H₂O but arrangement of water differs. 3️⃣ Coordination Isomerism Occurs when both cation and anion are coordination complexes and ligands exchange between them. Example: [Co(NH₃)₆][Cr(CN)₆] [Cr(NH₃)₆][Co(CN)₆] 4️⃣ Linkage Isomerism Occurs when ambidentate ligand attaches through different atoms.
