INDLELA YASEMAKANA : THE MAKANA ROUTE The Amathole Heritage Initiative, launched in 2004, was a project of the Amathole District Municipality (Umasipala Wesithili Sase Amathole). The initiative saw the development of four heritage routes that explored the historical landscape of this fascinating part of South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. The intention was to unlock the value of the rich heritage of the district for both social and economic development. The four heritage routes were named after amaXhosa kings and leaders - the Makana Route, the Maqoma Route, the Phalo Route and the Sandile Route. Together they covered the area between the Fish and Mbashe rivers. These videos bring to life places and stories to be explored on the heritage routes and aim to give the viewer a sense of the immense historical and cultural richness of Amathole and hopefully inspire the traveller to experience first-hand the magic of this world. Makana is celebrated as one of the great freedom fighters of the amaXhosa nation. Evicted from the Zuurveld, the land west of the Fish River, Makana lead the amaNdlambe in their resistance to the colonial invasion. Like so many amaXhosa leaders Makana was imprisoned on Robben Island. He died in a bid for freedom. The Makana Route includes the following towns and sites: Peddie, Alice, Dimbaza, King William’s Town, Bishi, and Hamburg. The video refers to historical sites in and around the town of Peddie, the German settler villages of Potsdam, Hamburg, Breidbach, Frankfort and Hanover, as well as military sites in Double Drift Game Reserve. ROUTE PLAQUES The informative plaques installed by the Amathole District Municipality, supported on recycled plastic frames have almost all been vandalised or damaged by UV making them illegible. DVD PRESENTATION The Heritage Route videos were issued on a DVD with each separate video taking the viewer on a journey along one of the heritage routes. Each route video was provided in English and repeated in isiXhosa. It was decided to separate each of the eight videos into a separate upload. This video upload contains only the Xhosa version of The Makana Route. The full DVD is available here: • Makana, Maqoma, Phalo + Sandile Routes: Am... COPYRIGHT The copyright on the route video remains with the Amathole District Municipality. The soundtrack to the video includes recordings from the ILAM in Grahamstown and the copyright on these likewise reside with ILAM.
