[anchor] Standby power refers to the electric power consumed by electronic products while they are switched off or on standby mode. Gadgets around the PC area in particular, gobble up standby power leading to the waste of electric power. Having focused on such an aspect, an environmentally-friendly PC came out equipped with a standby power control system. Let's take a look. [report] In South Korea alone, around 50 billion won is being wasted from standby power. When a PC is switched on for five minutes, the standby power consumption from gadgets amount to the follwing -- 2.6 W from a 19-inch monitor, 1.6 W from a speaker, 3 W from a printer, 6.4 W from a sharing device. Include the 1 W from the computer body, 14.6 W of electricity is being wasted during one hour. This is a PC that automatically stops wasting electric power. It is preloaded with a standby power control system. Simply pressing a zero switch shuts off all electric power to the monitor, the speaker, the sharing device, the printer as well as the PC, with a same effect of unplugging the power. The computer switches to a standby mode after a certain minutes of inactivity and blocks all electric power to the PC and other devices. It is made possible thanks to consolidating power supply, which connects related devices to the power outlet attached to the PC. The PC maker patented its PC as the first PC in the world equipped with a standby control system. [Interview - Song Do-hyun, Head of Technology at Moneual] Q. What made the company develop the pine tree PC? ~ The biggest issue in the IT industry has been green IT and eco friendly products. Keeping pace with such trend, we thought that if we could save power not only in the PC body but also in the related devices, it would save a lot more energy. If we replace 30 percent of the desktop PCs in South Korea with this product with a standby power control system, the effect will be the same as planting 100 million pine trees. It implies that it is very effective for saving energy and protecting the environment. [Interview - Song Do-hyun, Head of Technology at Moneual] Q. How was the market response and what are future plans? ~ As we have certified our green technology, it helped make the environmental friendliness of our product more recognizable. And it is interesting that we see a lot of demands from corporations and public sectors as well as from the private consumer market. Saving energy and cutting greenhouse gas emission is the most-talked about issue around the world.
