Now it’s time to measure your doors and drawer fronts. It’s always a good idea to draw a layout of your project before you start taking your measurements. If you aren’t an artist don’t worry. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece. Graph paper is a great tool to use when drawing a layout because the lines tend to act as a guide. You will want to measure the height and width of every door notating the measurements on your layout as you go. Be sure to double check your measurements. Having to re-order a component due to a measuring mistake costs not only money but time. When door orders are sent to the manufacturer they must be sent in decimal form and not fractions. This will be covered in depth in the next video. For now, you can use fractions. You can measure as small as a thirty second of an inch. But for most jobs rounding to the nearest sixteenth should work just fine. If you are using or re-using concealed hinges you will need to also need to take hinge measurements. To do this, simply remove a door then remove one of the hinges. The first measurement needed is the distance from the center of the hinge hole to the top edge of the door as seen in this diagram. The second measurement needed is the distance from the side edge of the door to the closest edge of the inside of the hinge hole. Be sure to take a quick look at the insides of all of the doors to check for variations in hinge placements. They should all be the same. However, if you notice any differences be sure to notate them on your drawing.
