The KYOTO travel video I mentioned in this video: • Traveling to KYOTO During The Pandemic [Is... Hey guys! This time around, we decided to hang out in 谷根千 (Yanesen). It is one of the well-known shitamachi in Tokyo as it is actually made up of three traditional towns that house a lot of historical structures. The name 谷根千 (Yanesen) is a combination of the names of the three traditional towns which are 谷中 (YAnaka), 根津 (NEzu), and 千駄木 (SENdagi). These three towns are located right next to each other and share the same atmosphere--which made locals call this huge shitamachi Yanesen. Famous 根津神社 (Nezu Shrine) has its name taken after where it is located-Nezu. The temple houses historical structures with 1900 years of history and is actually on the list of top 10 temples located in Tokyo. On the other hand, 旧安田楠雄邸庭園(Kusuo Yasuda's Former Residence) is a hidden gem in Yanesen. Back in the day, this is actually a former residence of a Japanese businessman named Kusuo Yasuda, but now, you may visit this very traditional Japanese house with a low fee of 500 yen. Pretty amazing how the organization protecting this property has kept most parts of this house as it is, which means they were able to keep its history of 100 years. It is very rare to see traditional houses in the big city now, so this hidden gem is highly recommended. Yanesen is actually NOT just about the old Japanese culture. If you go to 谷中 (Yanaka), you will see a lot of modern shops and cafes co-existing with the old ones. This is why a lot of locals visit Yanesen over the weekend as you can do a lot of things in one place. Yanaka is also known to be a cat town as there are a lot of cat-related things around the area, and you can also hang out with actual real cats if you get lucky! Yanesen is not as big as a tourist spot compared to 渋谷 (Shibuya) or 新宿 (Shinjuku) but it's still worth exploring! So if you are tired of the busy touristy spots in Tokyo, I would totally recommend you visit this place to experience a more chill side of the capital.
