A 54 year old Greek Air Force Colonel, Christos Flessas, has remanded in custody accused of spying for China. He faces life in prison if convicted of passing highly‑classified NATO secrets to China. According to Greek and international media, Flessas, a Senior Officer with deep access to NATO and Hellenic military communications is accused of photographing and transmitting secret files, using specialised encryption software provided by Chinese intelligence operatives. In his defence, Flessas’s lawyer maintains that his client believed he was sharing information with what he thought was a private Chinese company offering business consulting services, not intelligence agents. There has been no official comment from China on the allegations so far and Greek authorities say the case was uncovered following an alert by an US intelligence service, the CIA.
