In this exclusive Bigger Than Five interview, Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze renews his charge that the European Union backed the opposition and tried to topple his government following the country’s parliamentary elections. The Georgian PM hits back at accusations of “democratic backsliding” and says there are “forces which unfortunately negatively influence decision making in the European bureaucracy”. Kobakhidze also reveals that Ukraine’s leaders “explicitly” asked Georgia to join the war against Russia by opening a “second front” - a request he says he rejected to keep peace in his country. As anti-government protests continue in Tbilisi and EU membership talks stall, Georgia stands at a crossroads — between deepening its ties with the West or drifting toward powers in the East. Ghida Fakhry speaks with Prime Minister Kobakhidze about the political unrest, the future of democracy in Georgia, and whether his country’s European dream still has a future.
