ARABIAN NIGHTS (Composed by RON GOODWIN in 1959 and 1960 on Parlophone and Capital Records) Here is A JUGALBANDI of SITAR and GUITARS - Return to Paradise Main Sitar: Shri Chandrashekhar Phanse Guitars: Joslyn Braganza There is a singular, haunting solitude to “Return to Paradise” that sets it apart in Ron Goodwin’s original score. It holds a sense of longing that feels both vast and intimate. In this reimagining, Shri Chandrashekhar Phanse strips away the orchestral grandeur to reveal the melody’s fragile core through the sitar. Without the support of a sitar chorus, Phanse Sir’s main line stands alone and engages in a delicate, introspective conversation with Joslyn Braganza’s guitar. The arrangement feels steeped in a specific kind of melodic nostalgia. Interestingly, astute listeners often point out a striking parallel between this theme and the beloved Marathi classic “Akhercha Ha Tula Dandawat.” While the two pieces come from different worlds, they share a "musical hiraeth," a deep and resonant longing for a home that no longer exists. Keep an ear out for the interlude where Phanse Sir weaves in Goodwin’s signature melodic line, a ghostly echo of the 1963 original. It is a performance that feels less like a cover and more like a memory resurfacing. It captures the timeless, bittersweet quality of saying goodbye. A quiet masterpiece of isolation and beauty.
