A DEVASTATED dad has told how his vulnerable teenage daughter was secretly married in an illegal Islamic ceremony while she was in foster care – and how his signature was forged on the paperwork. Mark, from Portsmouth, said he was left “angry and shocked” after discovering 16-year-old Jacey had been wed by a Muslim cleric in 2023 – after the law changed to make all under-18 marriages illegal. The bombshell only emerged when foster carers found what looked like wedding photos on Instagram and a marriage certificate hidden under the teen’s bed. Mark claims the document carried his name and a fake signature despite him being on the other side of the country at the time. “Someone’s forged my name,” he said. “If it was an honest mistake they wouldn’t have done that.” Jacey had been in care under a voluntary arrangement, but her father says that when social services were told what had happened they took no meaningful action – leaving him to push police and prosecutors himself. “If it weren’t for me pushing, it would have been brushed under the carpet,” he said. The cleric, named in court as Ashraf Osmani, was eventually convicted over the ceremony at Northampton Crown Court and handed a 15-week suspended sentence. Mark blasted the punishment as “not very good justice”, adding that the man is still preaching. The imam has claimed it was an “innocent mistake” and said he did not know the law had changed. Mark, who raised his children alone, said his daughter had once been an army cadet and close to a Taekwondo black belt. But after she began mixing with Muslim friends at school, she began practising Islam and even went on to wear a burka. “I’m not against religion,” he said. “I’m here to protect vulnerable children. This happened while she was supposed to be being looked after – and parents need to know it can happen under their noses.” Have you got a story?
