The 1st amendment of the bill of rights states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The 1st amendment provides protection of 5 basic rights: speech, press, petition, assembly and religion. This video explores the history, purpose, and limitations of Free Speech. Some questions to spark discussion. 1. Of the 5 rights protected in the 1st amendment (speech, press, petition, assembly, and religion) which do you believe is most crucial, and why? 2. Is there a modern attack on the freedom of the press? 3. What do you think the founder’s response would be to modern media outlets holding a particular political bias? 4. If you were to reform the constitution what new restrictions would you place on the press? How would you make them more free? 5. Do you perceive the antagonistic relationship between government leaders and the press to be helpful or detrimental?
