What does it take to win Social Security disability benefits if you have chronic and severe knee pain? Understand that most people, including your judge, experience some knee pain as they age so you are going to need more than mild to moderate pain in your knee joints and a diagnosis of osteoarthritis. What SSDI judges need to see, as I explain in this video, is a level of knee pain than creates problems with your activities of daily living, and, in turn, would make you less reliable at work. SSA defines the term “disability” in terms of how your knee problems would prevent you from reliably performing basic work activities so you need evidence to show that your knee issues regularly create pain that makes it impossible for you to concentrate. Other symptoms that would create work limitations include the need to keep your legs extended over waist level, the regular need for drainage of fluids (and perhaps a diuretic prescription that causes frequent urination), narcotic pain medication prescriptions or your doctor’s recommendation that you need a single or bilateral knee replacement.
