The Battle of Ashdown is likely to have been fought in the fields near Lowbury Hill, and known as the Fields of Blood. The Thames, around the end of the last ice age, changed it’s course through the London Basin but once it used to flow more north, and out to the Wash. Right here is the point where the river changed it’s course. The remains of the Roman Villa are evident on the top of Lowbury Hill, with burial mounds and other earthworks.
