In this new video Wayne National Forest Wetlands After 30 Years, I take you back to southern Ohio to revisit the wetland restoration sites we built with the U.S. Forest Service on the Ironton Ranger District from 1995 to 2014, all created for habitat enhancement, not mitigation. You’ll see how we designed and built wetlands in former farm fields by disabling buried drainage systems, shaping basins, building low-maintenance dams only where needed, and using simple field tools like an optical level and soil auger, then you’ll see what time, plants, and wildlife have done with those projects. During site visits in 2026, the wetlands looked remarkably natural and diverse, with beaver helping to maintain water levels and even expanding wetland habitat. This episode includes a detailed look at Pine Creek, Sand Fork, Superior, and Cadmus, along with hard lessons learned about flood damage, drainpipes, spillways, muskrats, and why the most lasting wetlands are the ones designed and built to function without dams, berms, water control structures, or drainpipes.
