The 424 years is said to be the longest period under colonial rule in the world. The former Portuguese jail of Fortim-do-Mar floats peacefully offshore, no visits allowed. However, there is an active prison within Diu Fort with barred windows visible on the approach. A zig-zag entrance, elephant gate, bastions, arches, cannons, old churches...a humungous fort to explore.
