What is Serum Calcium Test? Serum calcium test is a test which measures the levels of calcium in blood. Calcium is both a mineral and an electrolyte which plays a vital role in the formation and maintenance of healthy bones. It is also essential for the process of cell signaling, blood clotting, and proper functioning of muscles, heart and nerves. Why is Serum Calcium Test Done? -Your doctor might recommend this test during a regular health check-up. You might have what’s called a “blood panel” that also evaluates you for blood glucose, protein, etc. -You may also need to undergo this test if you have a disease that alters calcium levels such as bone disease (osteoporosis, osteomalacia), kidney or liver disease.
