Charles Upton is a Sufi Muslim, author, activist, and poet, presently identified with the Traditionalist/Perennialist School founded by René Guénon. He has authored 13 books on “metaphysics and social criticism,” 4 poetry books, and 3 on Islam and Sufism. A protégé of the Beats, he has a background with the Catholic and Presbyterian churches, the “spiritual revolution” and peace movements of the 1960’s and 70’s, and the Sanctuary Movement for Central American refugees (and, briefly, the New Age) in the 1980’s. In 1988 he joined the Nimatullahi Sufi Order out of Iran, under Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, which he remained connected with until Nurbakhsh’s death in 2006. In 2020 be became associated with a lesser-known silsila of the ‘Alawiyya Tariqah. In 2013 he conceived the Covenants Initiative, based on the book The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World by Dr. John Andrew Morrow, which has since become an international peace movement in the Muslim world.
