Gaston Litaize (1909-1991) Lied, from "Douze Pièces" Johann Vexo, organ Recorded live in the Cathedral of the Madeleine Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Eccles Organ Festival, 26th Season 10 November 2019 ecclesorganfestival.com @ecclesorganfestival Like Vierne, Gaston Litaize was also born blind and also studied with Adolphe Marty at the National Institute of Blind Youth. Following Marty’s death in 1942, Litaize not only succeeded him at the Institute but also as organist at Saint-François-Xavier for the remainder of his life. His earliest works were composed throughout the 1930s and published in 1939 as 12 Pieces. These non-programmatic, non-liturgical pieces marry the earlier French symphonic style to a fresh neo-classical transparency and harmony. The solemn melody of Lied [Song] in C major sounds on a reed stop surrounded by vibrantly harmonic accompaniments and interludes, culminating with a minor seventh canon. (from the Concert Program Notes, by Dr. Kenneth Udy)
