Following Marty’s death in 1942, Litaize not only succeeded him at the Institute but also as organist at Saint-François-Xavier for the remainder of his life. His earliest works were composed throughout the 1930s and published in 1939 as 12 Pieces. These non-programmatic, non-liturgical pieces marry the earlier French symphonic style to a fresh neo-classical transparency and harmony. The solemn melody of Lied [Song] in C major sounds on a reed stop surrounded by vibrantly harmonic accompaniments and interludes, culminating with a minor seventh canon.
