On July 21, 2025, the Supreme Court made sharp yet significant observations about the role of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in politically sensitive matters. While hearing ED's plea challenging a Karnataka High Court order, the bench headed by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai clearly stated that the ED should not be used as a tool for political battles. The case concerned the quashing of summons issued to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah’s wife B.M. Parvathi and Minister Byrathi Suresh in the MUDA land allotment case. The High Court had dismissed the summons in March 2025, and the ED had approached the Supreme Court against that decision. However, the Supreme Court not only upheld the High Court’s verdict but also criticized the ED’s overreach, stressing that constitutional bodies must act only on solid grounds and not as instruments of political vendetta.
