In this Wine Mastery episode, John and John sit down with a bottle of Argentine Malbec priced at £8.79 — a great value point on paper, especially for a grape variety Argentina is famous for. Known for deep colour, rich black fruit flavours and a natural partnership with steak, Malbec from this region often sets certain expectations. But as you’ll see in this tasting, this one took both of us in a direction we simply did not anticipate. We begin by exploring the bottle and label, in case you spot it on shelves near you. The wine pours a deep, almost purple-garnet colour, dense and not very translucent, hinting at what should have been a fuller-bodied red. But things shift quickly once we get to the aroma. On the nose, instead of the usual cherry or bold dark fruit, we found unexpected Cabernet-like aromas, floral notes, earthiness, and even something slightly chummy and perfumed. There’s genuine intrigue here, and the smell suggests richness and weight. But once we take that first sip, the wine’s personality changes again. Surprisingly, the palate is thinner than expected, with the flavour dropping away more quickly than we’d hoped. Tannins then surge forward and take over, almost shutting the wine down before any fruit can linger. As John M mentions, it creates a sense of imbalance — as though the aromas promise one experience but the wine delivers another. Even pairing the wine becomes tricky, because a traditional Malbec-and-steak scenario doesn’t suit this bottle. We explore whether a lamb chop or an unpasteurised Cheddar might work better. We also revisit a previous £4.50 Malbec we reviewed — one that dramatically outperformed today’s bottle at half the price — and that comparison heavily influences our scoring. Finally, the episode wraps with a viewer question from Jason Drake about why some wines travel well and others don’t, covering temperature shifts, tannins, personal taste conditions, and why holiday wines rarely taste the same back home. If you’re curious about how budget Malbecs compare, or why some reds deliver more on the nose than the palate, this is a fascinating tasting journey.
