Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, is a fascinating meeting between ancient history and modern architecture. Nestled along the shores of the Caspian Sea at almost thirty metres below sea level – traces of human settlement date back to the stone age. The Fire Temple of Baku is a castle-like religious temple in the outskirts of the Azerbaijani capital. Based on Iranian and Indian inscriptions, the temple was used as a Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian place of worship for many centuries. Another distinct landmark in Baku is The Heydar Aliyev Centre. A complex designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid and noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style.
