Every Christmas, we picture the wise men the same way. Three kings. Crowns on their heads. Standing quietly beside the manger on the night Jesus was born. But that’s not actually how the story goes. In this espresso shot, we slow down and strip away a few of the traditions that have grown up around the wise men and listen closely to what Matthew actually tells us. Who were these men? Why were they watching the stars? And why does it matter that they came from the east? Along the way, I share a few personal memories from childhood pageants and an unexpected encounter with Epiphany celebrations in the Canary Islands, before stepping into the historical possibility that these travelers were scholars and traders, likely connected to ancient Nabatean trade routes. This is a story about outsiders who noticed something strange in the heavens and chose to follow it. About curiosity, courage, and the long road toward truth. And about a birth that was never meant to stay small, local, or contained.
