Microtia is a congenital condition characterized by the underdevelopment or absence of the external ear (auricle). This condition can affect one or both ears and varies in severity. For individuals born with microtia, the shape, size, and position of the ear can differ significantly from typical anatomy. While microtia can pose challenges for hearing and self-esteem, advancements in medical science have paved the way for effective treatment options. Reconstructive surgery for microtia requires specialized training. Surgeons performing these procedures typically undergo extensive education and training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, often completing fellowships focused on craniofacial surgery or ear reconstruction. Dr. Fairbanks, a distinguished plastic surgeon with significant expertise in ear reconstruction, is a past President of both the Utah Plastic Surgery Society and the Salt Lake Surgical Society. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and the International Society for Auricular Reconstruction. His contributions to the field are noteworthy, having published numerous works and international presentations on ear reconstruction. Dr. Fairbanks spoke to Kari Hawker-Diaz about microtia and ear reconstruction. MORE: https://kutv.com/features/fresh-livin...
