For us, 2022 commemorates not only Victoria's 23rd Annual Ska & Reggae Festival – the biggest in the festival’s history – but it was also the first time in three summers that we were able to gather together and welcome the world to heart of Downtown Victoria. With so much time apart, we anticipated a renewed energy to permeate the festivities, but we couldn't have anticipated just how overwhelmingly powerful that love and energy would be. Victoria Ska & Reggae festival XXIII was not just our biggest lineup ever, but it brought the biggest crowds with biggest smiles. This year brought absolutely unforgettable headline performances from reggae royalty The Wailers and King Yellowman (with his incredibly talented daughter K'Reema), a long overdue set from hometown reggae icons Bedouin Soundclash, an unstoppable funk assault courtesy of Vancouver's Five Alarm Funk, an otherworldly deep rave-like set from New York sensation Too Many Zooz and the Canadian debut of New Zealand reggae heroes Three Houses Down feat. General Fiyah. And that was just the tip of the iceberg! Not just limited to the Ska and Reggae music that makes our namesake, Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival rededicated itself to highlighting the truly global influence of Jamaican-rooted musics as we reached far and wide to bring exciting new acts to our stages. One of Canada's best reggae soldiers took to our stage as Steele & The Mob Squad Band played an incredible set during our opening day festivities along with Ontario's Street Pharmacy, who made more than a few new fans that day. We were given a hearty helping of soul when Tanika Charles and her band dazzled our Inner Harbour audience and we got a big dose of Indigifunk when Curtis Clear Sky & The Constellationz laid down a set of thick grooves and positive vibes. While A. Skillz – one of the most revered DJs on the planet – made his way from England on the weekend of his birthday for a very special one-off performance as he took our stage for the first time. Hip-hop always has a place on the festival and this year was no different as party-rocker extraordinaire The Gaff was joined on stage by Sweatshop Union alumn Mo Moshiri and Def3 lit up Upstairs Cabaret on a Thursday night, along with a phenomenal set of bassy delights from Frase + Fawna. There's so much more that we missed here, but can you blame us with 5 days + nights jam-packed with so much musical goodness?! This is all to say, that Victoria's 23rd Annual Ska & Reggae Fest was a success beyond anything we could have envisioned. Our hearts were filled to brim with good music and love from all our returning friends and family – and all the new friends we met! From the bottom of our hearts, we cannot thank you enough. Thank you to everyone who came through our gates for paid or free shows. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers who makes the festival run. Thank you to all the vendors and sponsors who kept us fed and quenched. And thank you to all the incredible artists who shared their music with us. None of this exists without the incredible community that has been built around this festival and this city. Keep your eyes open for our year-around programming as we keep the dance floors warm until next summer! A very special thank you to the good people of Blackwing Visual Media for this phenomenal recap video!
