Exploring a Fire Clay Mine. The search for fossils

In this video we explore urbex a fire clay mine. We are in the Lancashire coal field Burnley to be precise exploring an abandoned Fire Clay mine. The Lancashire coalfield was laid down during a carboniferous period. There are geological layers of rock, shale coal and clay. Quite often the coal mines have a neighbouring Fire clay mine, as the geological strata is associated with coal. Fire clay is used for making heat resistant bricks for chimneys, kilns, blast furnaces. This abandoned victorian mine probably ceased production in the 1920's. We are also looking for fossils as the rock is rich in the remains of an ancient carboniferous forest. We find some great plant fossils in this fire clay mine.
